I DO NOT REMEMBER WHO FIRST SAID TO ME, IF ANYONE DID by Thomas Putnam. Putnam is appearing in EVERY BRILLIANT THING the second and third weekends in September.

The second stanza of Mary Oliver's “A Poem for the Blue Heron” reads like this:

I do not remember who first said to me, if anyone did:
Not every thing is possible:
some things are impossible,
      and took my hand, kindly,
and led me back
from wherever I was.

Crawling around inside the skin of the teller of the story of Every Brilliant Thing has been and continues to be—maybe even increasingly so—an enlightening and often disturbing and always challenging experience. This man's relationship with his mother and his father—completely different relationships—are in so many fundamental ways foreign to me. How he deals with their depression, however, startles me because it is so like me. My parents, so far as I know, did not suffer from depression, but if they had I could easily find myself uttering this guy's words.

I've never had a breakup of a marriage I don't know how I would live through that. I can't fathom going through it, but living in this man's shoes, speaking his words, presenting his vision of the break-up...well, it seems to ring true, makes sense....could be.

So these words in the second stanzof Mary Oliver's poem. Quite frankly I can hardly read each line before I break down and have to go back and start at the beginning. Why is this? I don't want to analyze it or try to sort out what it “means”. I'm just throwing it out there as a response as a complement as an invitation to go with me on this journey. I know you will potentially only join with me for the 80 minutes of the length of the play while you sit in the audience, but I hope you'll stay for the talk-backs, dialogue with others after the show in the Gallery, explore respond dig a bit while you gather at Peggy's or your breakfast table or the front seat of your car.

Read it out loud. Vocalize it and hear it:
I do not remember who first said to me, if anyone did:
Not every thing is possible:
some things are impossible,
      and took my hand, kindly,
and led me back
from wherever I was.
