Writing to me is a means of exploring, examining, expounding, explaining, exchanging

Writing to me is a means of exploring, examining, expounding, explaining, exchanging – so many ex- prefixes meaning to pull out from the interior, to bring inner thoughts to light, to share experiences with others. The Hamilton-Gibson Women’s Writing Project guided me through the process of playwrighting, something I had never tried before. Characters come to life on the stage, words on the written page spoken for an audience to hear, actions visualized not only in the mind’s eye but also in real time.

Ten minutes. Telling an entire story in that restricted amount of time through the words and actions of characters on a stage. It’s a challenge and a discipline. Dialogue propels the plot. That’s the author’s contribution. The actors convey the story, bringing the author’s inner thoughts to light. The audience examines the process, bears witness to the play, shares in the experience. All this beginning with my innermost thoughts and a blank piece of paper. For me, that’s the joy, the beauty, the wonder – the excitement and exhilaration - of playwrighting.
